Restaurant Closures are DOWN in Miami-Dade and Broward.

 There have been very few RESTAURANT CLOSURES in the past two months.

ARE RESTAURANT OWNERS AND MANAGERS DOING BETTER? ARE LOCAL 10 DIRTY DINING REPORTS HAVING ANY EFFECT?

 We decided to take a look at the data. We compared  January 2010 to  January 2011 and  closures down 90%. We also compared the  first three weeks for February 2010 to 2011, closures down 40%. Are there less inspectors? Are there less inspections?

RESTAURANT DATA

JANUARY 2009   *6*   MIAMI DADE AND BROWARD CLOSURES

JANUARY 2010   *10* MIAMI DADE AND BROWARD CLOSURES

JANUARY 2011   *1* MIAMI DADE AND BROWARD CLOSURES

FEBRUARY 2009 *11* MIAMI DADE BROWARD CLOSURES

FEBRUARY 2010 *8* MIAMI DADE BROWARD CLOSURES

FEBRUARY 2011 *2* MIAMI DADE BROWARD CLOSURES

 WE ASKED THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL REGULATION WHAT THEY THOUGHT ABOUT THIS TREND? BELOW IS THE RESPONSE;

Jeff,

We are still conducting two inspections each year, as required by statute, as well as when a complaint is made.  We do not have fewer investigators. We have noticed a downward trend in closures, but it is premature for us to draw any conclusions at this time. Thanks!
